Among the 200 countries in the world, Argentina is the eighth largest
nation: it holds its position after Russia, Canada, China, United States,
Brazil, Australia and India . At the same time, it is one of the countries with
less population density. Nowadays, it accounts for a 0.6 per cent
of the whole world population.
Situated in an area which is perhaps "too southern", this country suffered
the consequences of being rather isolated. For, if we bear in mind that the
most important economic centers are in the Northern Hemisphere, it becomes clear
that actually, Argentina is a distant country. The truth is that nowadays, by
way of technology and the new mass media, the former "distance" has been
overcome and Argentina's situation in the world does no longer depend on its
geographic situation.
Trends of populational development
The world demographic development rate remarkably increased as compared to the
earliest population data available. However, a relatively new trend arose: the
population of developed countries started to decrease as against the populational
rise in the developing countries; therefore, the world demographic development
rate is not homogeneous.
Furthermore, it is necessary to bear in mind that scientific advances had a
strong influence on the decrease of death rates and the lengthening of life.
Demographic features of Argentina
Argentina presents a populational development rate similar to that of
the developed world (even though slightly lower, a 1.5 per cent a year
against a 1,7 per cent ), which makes it different from the rest of the Latin
American countries, characterized by a higher rate.
Argentine birth and death rate are closer to the world average; however,
its demographic density is markedly lower.
